How the ranking works
The editorial model starts with each airport's official connection pattern, then weights destination area, domestic or international trip, transfer preference, luggage and arrival period. It does not use live schedules, traffic, ticket inventory or personal data. A higher rank means “investigate this first,” not a guaranteed faster or cheaper journey.

The best airport for your trip depends on where you are going after landing. Compare the flight and the ground journey together: transfers, luggage, arrival time and the final walk to your destination all matter. A cheaper ticket is less attractive if it adds an awkward late-night transfer.

Choose the connection before the flight
- JFK: AirTrain plus subway or rail
JFK AirTrain links the airport with Jamaica and Howard Beach. Jamaica connects with the Long Island Rail Road and subway; Howard Beach connects with the subway. Check which route fits your destination rather than assuming every Manhattan address has the same best connection.
- Newark: AirTrain, regional rail or bus
Newark lists AirTrain, NJ Transit, Amtrak and express bus among its public transport options. Distinguish Newark airport from other Newark stations when planning. Confirm the terminal connection and current airport advisories before travel.
- LaGuardia: bus connection or road transport
LaGuardia lists bus connections to subway and regional rail services, as well as licensed taxis. Plan the bus leg explicitly; a route to a nearby rail station is not yet a route to the terminal.
Compare the whole journey
- Start with your exact hotel or destination address, not just “New York.”
- Enter the expected time you will leave the terminal, allowing for immigration and baggage where applicable.
- Count changes between vehicles and look for stairs or long walks.
- Check the total fare for everyone traveling together, including separate airport connections.
- Keep a second route ready for disruption or a late arrival.
The MTA warns that airport journeys may involve crowded vehicles and stairs. If you have bulky luggage or need step-free access, verify accessibility for each transfer. A route that looks simple on a diagram may be inconvenient with several bags.
Changing airports is a separate journey
If your itinerary lands at one airport and departs from another, treat the transfer as a full ground trip. Check baggage collection, check-in deadlines, security and any border formalities. Do not use a terminal-transfer estimate to judge whether an airport-to-airport connection is feasible.
Before buying separate tickets, consider what you would do if the first flight arrived late. Compare the cost of a missed onward flight with any initial saving. There is no single safe connection time that covers every itinerary.
